Songs of the Second Wave

Part concert, part doc theatre piece, Songs of the Second Wave looks back to the 1970s to contextualize, celebrate, and critique the women’s music of that decade. Developed out of research done at the Lesbian Herstory Archives in Brooklyn and Harvard’s Schlesinger Library on the History of Women in America, this show weaves archival material with work by artists ranging from Cris Williamson to Maxine Feldman to Sweet Honey in the Rock. The piece features lesbian classics like Alix Dobkin’s “A View from Gayhead” (Every Woman Can Be a Lesbian)," moving ballads such as “Amazon," the adopted theme song of the Michigan Womyn’s Musical Festival, and rousing singalongs such as the Chicago Womyn’s Liberation Band’s anthem "Papa Don’t Lay That Shit On Me.”

Originally staged by three performers, it has since been re-worked into a one-woman show.
